BUILDER'S TIP

Get tips from real flyers! I'll post the tips that people pass on to me, but first I'll try them myself. So go take a look at the tip you need.

Ni-Cad Glo Starter Holder:
Do you simply toss your Ni-Cad glo starter somewhere in your flight box after starting your model? Would you like a quick, simple, and good looking way to keep your Ni-Cad glo starter handy? I remember seeing this tip in a magazine some time ago. Find one of those plastic canisters you've got from your 35mm film. Cut a hole in the bottom of the plastic canister so that the Ni-Cad starter will fit into the canister. Next, cut a half round hole at the top of the canister. This hole will allow you to easily grab the Ni-Cad starter, and it also makes attaching the plastic canister to your tool box very easy. Just find a spot on your flight box and attach the canister with a round head screw. That's it!
Fuel Soaked Wood:
How do you get that fuel and oil out of your balsa? Well you could buy that product they sell, but Mike Arthurs says you can get great results from a little cornstarch and rubbing alcohol. I used this method on my Somethin' Extra and it worked great! Just mix a paste out of cornstarch and rubbing alcohol. Next, apply the paste to the fuel-soaked area and let it dry overnight. The next day, simply remove the dried paste, and the oil will be gone! Sometimes you have to do the same area twice to get out all the oil.
Fuel Tank Repair:
It was the day before the contest, and I discovered a leak in my fuel tank! What could I do? I couldn't get a new one from the hobby shop - they were already closed! Luckily, I called Owen Perkinson, and he talked me through this quick fix. Using my soldering iron and a plastic, translucent coffee can lid, I quickly sealed the hole. First I cleaned the tank with alcohol and let it dry. Then I cut the lid into strips and used them like solder to seal the tank. You've got to be careful because the iron can put bigger holes in the fuel tank if you get it too close. If you can get the surface of the fuel tank and the plastic strips to melt, then they'll mold together as they cool. And PRESTO, instant coffee fix for a fuel tank hole.
Pen Barrel Needle Extension:
This is one of those simple ideas that make so much sense it's silly. Don't reach for the needle valve on your Super Tiger or other engine that has a needle valve actually on the carburetor. Instead, do like Mike Munday and use the barrel of an inexpensive ball point pen to adjust the needle. The barrel of a Bic round stic pen is the perfect size to adjust the Super Tiger needle valve. Why not try it yourself?
Plastic AMA Card Holder:
Where do you keep your AMA card? How about your club card? Would you like a quick, good looking way to keep your AMA and club card? If you're like me, your children have a small collection of Pokémon trading cards. My boys kept some of their favorite cards in hard plastic card holders. I borrowed three of these for my modeling use. I took one hard plastic card holder and used velcro to attach it to the side of my field box. That way I can keep my AMA card where I'll always need it, at the field! I used velcro again to attach another card holder to my combat hard hat. Now I keep my Radio Control Combat Association membership card there. And I used CA to glue a plastic clothes pin to the last card holder. I can pin this last card holder to my shirt or jacket and display my club membership card whenever I'm at the flying field. Country Time Lemonade as an epoxy mixing cup - Rocks photo
Drink Mix Epoxy Cup:
Would you like a cheap, effective epoxy mixing cup? The plastic lid and cans from many powered drink mixes make great epoxy cups! We enjoy Country Time Lemonade, and when we're done with the can, I use the lid and bottle as epoxy cups! Take a look in the kitchen and I bet you'll find many more creative uses for the product packaging you find there.
