October Flying Reports

A Day of Combat

Saturday, October 14, 2000: The Colonial Virginia Aeromodelers held their last "Outlaw Combat Contest" today. We had a light turn-out, but a great time.

This non-RCCA rules event allowed any aircraft with a max engine limit of .46. Our four pilots flew four rounds of combat. Each round lasted five minutes, with a two minute launch window. Points were awarded for launch on time, complete flight, cuts, mid-air, and surviving a mid-air.

Atmosphere - We held the contest in a very relaxed manner, with 15 to 30 minute breaks between rounds. It was interesting to see two of the combat pilots finish a round and walk over to take their student pilot up for a flight.

Highlights - In the first round the pilots spent most of their time adjusting to the pace of combat. However, two SPAD Dominators closed on a Tower Uproar midway through the heat and took several feet of streamer! The second round passed uneventfully, but we all tried real hard:-) In the third round, John's Dominator chomped streamer as my Dominator collided with the Uproar. Amazingly, neither plane was damaged. Our final round was a no-holds barred event. I took John's streamer and string off two feet from his tail!

Joe Adams Fly In #2

Sunday, October 15, 2000 - The Isle of Wight flying club hosted the second Fly In to benefit Joe Adams this Sunday. Joe Adams, former York County Sherrif and NNPRC Club president, recently suffered medical problems. The modelers from the local area came together to show their support for this great area pilot. Bernie sent me these great photos, but I don't have much information about the event.

Guest of Honor

Jay Jennings told me that everyone had a great time. He also said that Joe Adams made it out to the field! Apparently he's doing better. Jay mentioned that he looked pretty good, but he didn't say if he flew his Suhkoi.

Flying at Newport News Park RC Field

Sunday, October 15, 2000 - While many folks went to the Joe Adams fly in, several of us made it out to the NNPRCC field. I went out to work on my Pica Focke Wulf 190A, and Larry Wall came out as my guest to fly his Sig 4 Star 40. We also saw Mike Atkinson and his Apprentice, as well as Owen Perkinson and his new Hobbico Extra 300. Jeff Whippo came out and flew for a short time, and Carlos brought out his trainer for a couple quick flights. Later, Keith Aveyard tried to fly his helicopter, but something wasn't quite right and she broke.

Studley Shoot-out Open Combat

The Hanover Radio Control club, near Richmond, held their annual Studley Shoot-out Open combat contest Saturday, October 28. I took the ride out there with my Pica Focke Wulf 190A to try my luck. I'm really glad I did because we had a great time.

We flew six rounds of intense combat from 10 AM until 1:30 PM. The pilots really brought out a mix of planes. I flew a borrowed Tim Bat and my 190. Three guys tore up the skies with Tuff Flight Predators, and Jack Lewis flew his contest winning P-40. We also had the chance to mix it up with a foam 190 and a Check Six Mustang. While the high speed twisting and turning, and the three mid airs were exciting, a Cessna managed to steal the show.

One of the spectators decided he could make better time from North Carolina if he flew in. So just before the contest, Jack Lewis cleared the field and we watched as the Cessna 182 touch down smack in the middle of the runway. She didn't bounce, and she didn't leave tracks. The pilot put her down like a feather. And her departure was equally exciting. Because of houses surrounding the field, he made a down wind take off!

To top off the day's excitement, I managed to tie with Chris Shepherd for third place. We each walked away with a Pica combat model kit. Chris took the Focke Wulf 190A, and I've got a brand new F4U Corsair to build. I can't wait until the next combat event!

December Flying Reports

Combat in the Park!

Monday, December 18, 2000 - Craig Baker made it up to the Newport News Park RC field from Georgia. He and I managed six rounds of open combat practice. The flying was often intense and interesting. Craig took the lead early, and while I kept it from being a shut out, I never managed to catch up. His great flying netted him six cuts to my four. I had a great time flying with Craig, and I hope he'll make it to our field for our April combat contest!
