Studley Shoot-Out

Open Combat in Hanover

Saturday, October 28, 2000- The Hanover Radio Control club, near Richmond, held their annual Studley Shoot-out Open combat contest Saturday, October 28. I took the ride out there with my Pica Focke Wulf 190A to try my luck. I'm really glad I did because we had a great time.

We flew six rounds of intense combat from 10 AM until 1:30 PM. The pilots really brought out a mix of planes. I flew a borrowed Tim Bat and my 190. Three guys tore up the skies with Tuff Flight Predators, and Jack Lewis flew his contest winning Check Six Plans P-40. We also had the chance to mix it up with a foam 190 and a Check Six Mustang. While the high speed twisting and turning, and the three mid airs were exciting, a Cessna managed to steal the show.

One of the spectators decided he could make better time from North Carolina if he flew in. So just before the contest, Jack Lewis cleared the field and we watched as the Cessna 182 touch down smack in the middle of the runway. She didn't bounce, and she didn't leave tracks. The pilot put her down like a feather. And her departure was equally exciting. Because of houses surrounding the field, he made a down wind take off!

To top off the day's excitement, I managed to tie with Chris Shepherd for third place. We each walked away with a Pica combat model kit. Chris took the Focke Wulf 190A, and I've got a brand new F4U Corsair to build. I can't wait until the next combat event!

As always, our events wouldn't happen if it weren't for the great support we get from family and friends. Thank you Chef Rex Sadler for your delicioua grub! And thank you Tracey Newcomer for acting as official time keeper, even after Gator drug you all the way to Hanover. ll the judges for their help making it an enjoyable day at the field. Also, CD Jack Lewis sends out a BIG thanks to sponsors: Pica, Doug's Hobby Shop, Hobby Corner, Gator Enterprises and Check Six Plans.
